Local and seasonal never tasted better: Homemade Peach Ice Cream

Local and seasonal – have you heard those words? They go together.

Eating locally means eating seasonally. Including foods that are abundantly available into our eating habits is not only good for us nutritionally, it can also be helpful to our wallets. Seasonal foods are fresher, easier to get, more flavor and have a higher nutrition value.

During transportation most produce will lose some of its flavor, especially if it is picked early or refrigerated before we buy it. When produce is picked in season and consumed closer to harvesting, research shows that nutritional value is higher in Vitamin C, folate and carotenes. If the produce has to be transported across the country, it loses some of the nutritional value, so the best foods are those that are purchased closest to home.

Eating locally will help with the health of your wallet as well. If you purchase foods at peak growing season there is usually a surplus on the market, which means a better price!

Great time of the year to make your own peach ice cream. Try this recipe. It is pretty easy to prepare, and a great way to use local peaches!

Homemade Peach Ice Cream

Ingredients:

  • 5-6 large peaches, finely chopped
  • 12 oz. apricot nectar
  • 1½-2 cups sugar
  • 12 oz. skim evaporated milk
  • 1 quart of skim milk
  • Nonfat dry milk, to thicken skim milk

Preparation:

  • Blend peaches with small amount of apricot nectar and mix with all remaining ingredients.
  • Pour into ice cream churn.
  • Churn.

Nutrition Information: 149 Calories, 1 gram fat, 2.4 mg. cholesterol, 65 mg. sodium
